CYCLING aces Charlie and Will Cooper raced at the British Schools Hard Track Championships in Portsmouth.

The boys rode for Chichester High School for Boys at the Mountbatten Centre. The championships are organised by the British Schools Cycling Association with riders coming from as far afield as Manchester, Halesowen, Jersey and Bradford.

Charlie raced in the under-15s, Will in the under-13s.

The event consists of three disciplines - pursuit (an individual race against the clock), a match sprint (against other riders with qualifying) and a scratch race (bunch event with first over the line winning).

Both boys producd great times in the pursuit, with Charlie posting a personal best and ending fourth overall.

The match sprint is Will’s least favourite event, but he gave his best performance to date. Charlie loves it and made it to the final finishing off with a third.

Points are scored based on finishing positions, so at this point Charlie had scored 35 from a possible 40 and Will 20.

Will maintained his overall position and Charlie moved up to third equal.

The scratch race was seven kilometres for Will and nine for Charlie. Will worked hard and finished in the bunch, again maintaining his overall position - and best to date.

Charlie needed to keep ahead of the rider in joint third and both riders kept a close eye on one another during the 18 laps of the half-kilometre circuit.

It came down to the final sprint and Charlie lost out by half a wheel - which meant one point less and fourth place overall. It was his best to date and a great result bearing in mind his crash the previous week in Bournemouth.
