Nelson heads for Goodwood - but who will make music on racecourse?

The Three Friday Nights at Goodwood have been a tremendous success, with Rudimental on May 31 and Groove Armada’s Andy Cato on June 14 both performing in front of sell-out crowds.

Trevor Nelson will be a sell-out too, with the last few tickets set to be snapped up.

There are six races before Nelson’s set and Amosite, trained by John Jenkins, will be chasing a hat-trick when she lines up in the £8,000 Trevor Nelson Fillies’ Handicap (8.25pm, 15 entries) over seven furlongs.

The seven-year-old mare has been a revelation since reverting to turf this season, annexing seven-furlong handicaps at Warwick on May 6 and Newbury on June 8.

Jenkins said: “I don’t see any reason why Amosite won’t run at Goodwood on Friday. She has been in very good form since her win at Newbury and there have been no problems.

“I don’t think there has been any particular reason for her improvement but she is a really tough filly and maybe the step up in distance to seven furlongs has helped her.

“It is a tricky old track at Goodwood but I think she will be OK and I’m hoping there is more to come from her.”

The 15 entries for the Trevor Nelson Fillies’ Handicap also include Keep The Secret, trained locally by William Knight, who was an impressive winner of a Lingfield Park maiden in December, and David Simcock’s Midnight Flower, who beat Nardin in a competitive six-furlong handicap at Newmarket on June 7.

Knight sent out the Frankie Dettori-ridden Goodwood Mirage to win the 10-furlong Bibendum Handicap at Goodwood last Friday for the Goodwood Racehorse Owners’ Group.

Dettori secured a double (Stormy Paradise in the Advance Resources Managers Maiden Auction was his other winner) during the evening when there was a race named in his honour, marking the 26 years that have gone by since he partnered his first British winner (Lizzy Hare in 1987) at Goodwood.

Racing gets underway this Friday at 6.15pm with the MTV Staying Alive Foundation Apprentice Handicap (22 entries) and runs through to 8.55pm with the Goodwood Farm Shop Handicap (15 entries).

The remaining races on the card are the Three Friday Nights Handicap (6.50pm, 17 entries), the Bibendum Fillies’ Maiden (7.20pm, 22 entries) and the richest race of the evening, the £12,000 Gordon’s Handicap (7.55pm, 18 entries), over a mile and three quarters.

The entries for the Gordon’s Handicap include Arch Villain and Stock Hill Fair, both winners at Goodwood last time out.

Clerk of the Course Seamus Buckley said: “We had four millimetres of rain after racing on Friday evening and into Saturday morning.

“The going is good and we are selectively watering to maintain the current conditions. There is a chance of some showers this week.

“I would anticipate that conditions will be very similar to last Friday, when the ground rode beautifully.”
