Now man's best friend is Goodwood's best friend too...

The Kennels Dog Membership has been established at the 36-hole venue for all breeds and every canine membership subscription is donated to the Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, which cares for more than 10,000 less fortunate animals each year.

More than 40 owners and their canine companions have eagerly signed up for the one-off £50 membership, and benefits include a personalised dog bowl, tasty but healthy treats on request, clubhouse access when accompanied by owner and seasonal walk maps round the 12,000-acre Goodwood estate.

There are no long waiting lists or formal interviews required or a strict dress code, just a request from the management to ‘paws for thought’ and ensure best behaviour at all times and to refrain from drooling, barking, chewing furniture and chatting noisily to other members, human or canine.

Andrew C Grahame, venues managing director at Goodwood, said: “We thought it would be a bit quirky and fun and on a more practical note, many of our members are dog owners so why not give them the opportunity to spend more time at the 19th hole and utilise the estate for their daily dog walks rather than rushing home?”

Despite the economic downturn, Goodwood’s credit membership, launched in 2006, is still proving popular to new members.

This form of pay-as-you-go golf starts from just £370 with 25 credits which can be used on either course.

AVISFORD PARK

Avisford Park’s monthly medal was won in Division 1 by Nathan Warren with nett of 68, and in Division 2 by Colin Butler, with nett 63.

The midweek medal competition was won by Peter collins with a nett 68.

The senior’s Stableford competition was won by Martin Crick with 35 points in Division 1, and John Hayes with 34 points in Division 2.

The STM texas scramble was won by Carl Corbin, Danny Carter and Stephen Porter with 55 points, as Martin Gill, Mick Hopkins and Brian Jeffries’ 60 points saw them finish second.

The cross country competition was won by Chris Wall, Ian Hardwell and Bob Boulter with a nett 30. While in a close second was Donald Every, Carl Corbin and William Salder with a nett of 31.

BOGNOR

It has been a very good season for Bognor GC’s ladies and veterans team, who have recorded some excellent results.

There have been eight away and home matches with teams comprising eight to ten pairs.

Thirty-six of those who represented the club in these matches took part in an end-of-season pre-selected teams-of-four stableford.

Winners were Barbara Evans, Dora Vaughan, Paul Black and Ken Catt with 77 points. Second, also on 77, were Cathy Kitt, June Smith, Joe Cookson and Derek Rice. Carol Adams, Kay Kingswell, Grainger Kitt and Rob Walker were third with 70.

That evening a superb club dinner was enjoyed, which put the final touches to a successful season.

Brian Poston and Pauline Littlejohns, the match organisers this year, were congratulated on their performance at the annual Mixed Pairs Open at West Chiltington.

A total of 28 pairs took part and Brian and Pauline were the winners with a very impressive 43 points.

COWDRAY PARK

Cowdray Park’s winter league season has got off to an unlucky start, with two of the first three home matches being lost to the weather.

The latest being the match against reigning champions, Puttenham, with both sides receiving two points each.

The latest cancellation will not help Cowdray Park in their quest to better last year’s runner-up position, as most of the other clubs have been able to complete some of their matches, due to the weather being more amenable.

Cowdray’s seniors also fell foul of the weather, with their December Stableford, which was the final Stableford of seniors’ captain Wally Mitchell’s successful term of office, being cancelled.

The proposed third leg of the Turkey Trots also had to be cancelled.

Nevertheless, two rounds were completed and next year’s prospective vice captain, Bill Hummerston, having finished third and first, with scores of 38 and 37 points, was declared the winner.

He finished five points clear of his nearest pursuer, Phillip Currie, who has completed a highly consistent first year in the seniors’ section.

In third place, on countback, came the ever-consistent Dave Hirons, with 68 points, just fending off the challenge of Peter Hardcastle, in much the same way as he overcame Graham Evans with a better back nine.

SELSEY

The veterans’ section held their annual general meeting at the start of the week and despite the conditions a total of 42 members braved the elements to attend.

Presentations were made to the winners of the summer competitions, both John Williamson and Tony Smith, who won the summer foursomes and Paul Boughton, winner of the summer singles Ray Mariner Cup.

The cup was presented to Boughton by the sponsor himself, who has also joined the veterans’ section and could be competing for the cup himself next year.

A presentation was also made to this year’s winner of the Eclectic Competition and for the first time in a number of years one player, Ray DeBuse, carded both the best net and gross score of 48 and 65 respectively.

Charity donations are important to the members and this year the treasurer was pleased to announce that a total of £700 had been donated to six charities, with the principal charity being St Wilfrid’s Hospice.

Mike Russell, 2010 veterans’ captain, nominated Brian Mariner as captain for the forthcoming year and this was unanimously approved.

Russell then presented the new captain with his cap and badge of office and welcomed him to the role for 2011.
