Penge, who competed with his partner Sophie Lamb for the first time in a competition, overcame food poisoning on the final day to seal the crown.

The pair won the first match on hole 20, before going onto make impressive progress throughout the four-day competition.

They claimed round two with a four and three score, before taking the next round with a seven and six victory.

A fine showing in round four followed and they ran out victors, four and two, before a quarter-final success followed six and five.

After fog delayed the final day start, Penge and Lamb defeated John Kemp and Mark Wharton three and two to secure a final place for the first time - with Penge having made the semi-finals in each of the past two tournaments.

With time against them, both teams had to make a quick turn-around to get back out on course for the final. Playing against the experienced pairing of Lewis Atkinson and Scott Marshall, Penge and Lamb played some terrific golf to land the tournament with an emphatic five and four victory.

Golf at Goodwood ambassador and Horsham-based Penge said of the win: “I have played in the Sunningdale foursomes twice before with different playing partners each time.

“I reached the semi-finals both times so this year I was determined to make it third time lucky.

“We closed the game out on the 15th hole [in the final].

“They [Atkinson and Marshall] had hit a great shot into the green and Sophie had hit our ball to the rough just off the green.

“I then chipped in and it was game over, we were the champions.

“I was still feeling ill and didn’t really show any emotion as I just wanted to get back to the clubhouse.

“Now I am feeling better I am so pleased that Sophie and I have won this tournament together.

“We really enjoyed the experience and can’t wait to see our names on the champions board at Sunningdale.

“We may possibly be the youngest pairing to have won it. To win an event like this at the age of 17 and 18 is a great achievement for both of us and something we will remember.”
