Perky Petworth enjoy tennis triumph over Tillington

Competitive spirit triumphed over the elements in Petworth Lawn Tennis Club's Match against Four Men of Tillington.

Play had to be switched to the hard courts and a fascinating match began under grey skies in unseasonal temperatures of four degrees Celsius.

In their first match Tillington’s Mark and Paul Clayton came back strongly after going 6-1 down. Nevertheless they didn’t quite overcome Rod Matthews and Peter Suart conceding the second set tie-break at 8-6.

Roger Morgan-Grenville and James Mitford gave Matthews and Suart another challenging match which ended in a nail-biting draw at 5-7, 7-5.

The Clayton brothers showed their edge defeating Petworth’s Hugo af Petersens and Sam Perry in style despite the latter’s earlier decisive win over Morgan-Grenville and Mitford.

Although victory was Petworth’s at 5-3 in sets, Tillington had a lot left in the bag. Petworth will have to work hard in the return match.
