Priory and Bexhill on home soil

Hastings Priory will be eager to get back to winning ways when they begin their home programme today (Saturday).

Priory will entertain 2009 runners-up East Grinstead in the Premier Division of the Sussex Cricket League on the back of a five-wicket loss at Horsham last weekend.

Captain Jason Finch said: "A lot of their more experienced players have moved on. They're going to be young and enthusiastic, but it's a chance for us, if we play well, to get 30 points.

"Like us, they're again in a bit of a transition period. They've got some good cricketers, but so have we. It could potentially be a very good game."

Priory are joint top of the embryonic league table - for what it's worth at this stage - three points and four places above Grinstead, who have won one and had one abandonment so far.

"We're in a position at the moment where we know it's going to be tough," added Finch. "We're very realistic, but we need everybody to do their bit. If we don't, we're going to get some drubbings. If we do, we'll be competitive."

Tim Eldridge will replace Tom Gillespie in the only anticipated change. Vice-captain Adam Maharaj-Newman is expected to continue in the seconds to get some wicketkeeping practice under his belt with a view to taking over behind the stumps in the front side when Richard Young becomes unavailable shortly. Play will get under way at 12.30pm at Horntye Park.

Elsewhere in the same division, Bexhill will return to home soil today against a Cuckfield side which was the last promoted team to retain its Premier Division status in 2006. Cuckfield have lost three out of three so far this year though. Play will also start at 12.30pm.

"I think we'd have to regard every game as an opportunity," said Bexhill first team manager Hamish Russell. "They're a very strong side, arguably the strongest we've played so far this year, and everybody has to be 100 per cent if we want to beat these guys."

Something has to give, meanwhile, as Sidley travel to Ifield in Division Three (East). Both teams have won their opening two fixtures, although Sidley boast four more points.

It will be the first ever league meeting between the two clubs because Crawley-based Ifield have moved across from Division Three (West), in which they finished seventh last year.

Captain Neil Priddy said: "We don't know them, they don't know us. The key thing is to continue playing the way we want to play. If we do that, there's no reason why we can't come out on the winning side."

There is still no Paul Thompson and Paul Nice can't play this week either. Scott Woodroffe has a slight wrist injury, but should be okay.
