Regatta cup

The Bexhill Rowing Club travelled to Hampshire to compete in the largest single day rowing regatta in England, with 10 coastal clubs and 14 Hants/Dorset clubs entering events at this regatta.Hopes were still high for a good day following last week's five wins.

The day started well with the junior sculls. Matt Mitchell was bidding for his sixth win to claim the 2003 championship. With a shaky start, he led the race along with Andy Bickers and Maitland of Ryde. Mitchell then increased his lead by 1500m, only to be clawed back with 50m to go. He managed to hang on to win by four feet with Bickers coming 4th, C. Doswell 5th & S. Doswell 6th.

Matt Mitchell followed in his brother's oarstrokes by winning the Junior Championship. Mark Mitchell raced the Senior Sculls event to win convincingly over the remainder of the field.

Mark & Matt Mitchell then produced a faultless row in the senior pair's event to win easily over their nearest rivals.

Chris Doswell & Steve Doswell raced the Novice scull event where Chris had a fine win in tough conditions to claim his first win in a sculls event, with Steve coming in just behind in 3rd.

The Junior pair of Nick & Phil McCorry finished a very creditable 3rd and the Veteran four finished behind the Folkestone crew in 3rd.

With most club members finishing in the points, the club collected the aggregate cup for the most successful club out of the 24 for the first time in the event's history.
