Robson gets Hankey out to land BDO darts honours at Selsey

With more than 1,000 competitors at Selsey for the richest prize fund in the BDO circuit, it was no surprise one of the big names in the sport lifted the England Open title.

Gary Robson reached the final by beating Tony O’shea 5-3 in his semi-final and then came up against a formidable Ted Hankey in the final.

Hankey, who had powered to a 5-0 semi-final win, was no match for Robson in the final and it ended 6-2.

The ladies’ final was won by Karen Lawman, who beat world No1 Trina Gulliver 4-3 in the semi and went on to win the final comfortably against an opponent from Finland.

Brian Hamblin from Eurotrucks Direct, a sponsor of Midhurst BDO player Andy Hills, was invited to attend and enjoyed a fantastic day of darts watching local and top players competing.

He said: “It’s the first competition like this I’ve been to. To be able to walk around the boards and talk and mix with the professionals was a dream come true, I’m looking forward to September’s Classic here at Selsey.”

Bognor’s Courtney Wilson reached the last 256 losing 3-0 to Sussex’s Matt Walton.

Hills lost 3-0 to Yorkshire professional Scott Waites, while another Midhurst player, Jason Hills, reached his board semi-final before losing 3-2 to Steve Coote.

Bognor player Graeme Dutton reached the last 256 but lost to Dorset’s Nigel Lamb. Chichester’s Chris Gatford lost 3-0 to Surrey’s Jason Kelly.

In the pairs, local players Jason Hills and Harry Annals took out professional players Stephen Bunting and Steve MacNally, but were unable to proceed further.

Chichester players Chris Gatford and Pat O’Hara, after eliminating the world under-21 champion Arron Monk and Sean White, were unable to go further.

Coming up this Saturday at the Littlehampton Tower Club, a charity tournament in aid of breast cancer awareness.

Singles and pairs competition entry is £5, with 50 per cent going to the charity.

There will be a 12-hour marathon match played on the day, plus a chance for a small fee to play either local PDC player Tony Ayres or world under-21 champion Arron Monk.
