Rowe aims for glory on home track at Fontwell Park

WEST SUSSEX trainer Richard Rowe is hoping for a success close to home when Fontwell stages its first meeting of the month tomorrow afternoon.

The handler is set to send Near The Water to pdost in the ladbrokes.com Handicap Hurdle at 3.20, the fifth race on a card of seven.

But he has decided against asking the same of a couple of other prospects from his stables near Storrington.

“Near The Water will run at Fontwell but It’s A Killer won’t,” said Rowe. “I’m hoping for a big run from him.

“He is entered at Sandown the next day but that race looks a little too hot.

“His owner Jane Southall loves having runners at Fontwell so that is where we’ll go.”

Rowe had also considered an outing for High Oscar, a recent winner at Fontwell, but has now decided it is too soon after his last race.

Ahead of final declarations, there were 150 runners in the frame for tomorrow’s racing, which begins at 1.20, so hopes are high for some decent-sized fields.

Sussex’s Jamie Moore and 2009 Grand National winner Liam Treadwell are among riders lined up to appear.

Easter Legend is another embarking on a fencing career following a successful spell over hurdles.

Emma Lavelle aimed high with the six-year-old and her faith paid off with a Grade Two placing at Ascot last January, while she was hardly disgraced in fifth behind Quevega at the Festival.

A subsequent trip to Cheltenham probably proved a race too far for her but having finished with a rating of 136 over hurdles, she merits respect in the Ladbrokes Supporting Great Ormond Street Hospital Mares’ Beginners’ Chase at 1.50.

Friday’s meeting doubles up as a Ladbrokes-sponsored fundraising day for Great Ormond Street Hospital, one of the causes backed by the Reuben Foundation, the charitable division of Fontwell Park owner Northern Racing.

Hosting a charity lunch for 200 guests will be actor Nat Parker, star of Land Girls and The Inspector Lynley Mysteries.

There will be collections for the hospital among racegoers.
