Rowing brothers gunning for hat-trick

THE dynamic duo of Matt and Mark Mitchell maintained their relentless charge to a third successive senior pairs rowing title by destroying the opposition at Folkestone Regatta.

The brothers made it five wins out of five for the season and now need only one more victory to clinch the Coast Amateur Rowing Association Regatta crown.

What better place to do it than on home water on Sunday August 1 when Bexhill attempt to host their event postponed from earlier in the month, starting at 9.30am.

Also on the Kent coast, the veteran four of Dave Jones, Steve Bickers, Steve Hopkins, Glen Payne and cox Callum Payne finished second, while the crew of Bob Balchin, Graham Dawes, Ray Philips, Paul Heskett and cox Jemma Cropper came sixth.

The junior four of Nick and Phil McCorry, Doug Holdaway, Andy Welling and cox Callum Payne finished runners-up in both the junior and junior senior fours events.

The newly formed junior B crew of Toby Mathews, Matt Hellier, Ashley Cahill, Joe Roberts and cox Cropper produced an excellent performance in the junior-senior event to finish third. Roberts and Cahill then teamed up to take fourth place in the junior pairs, just behind the McCorrys in third.

With the conditions becoming rough, the regatta was then called off for safety reasons.
