Girls urged: Give rugby a try

A GIRLS' rugby open day is being held at Chichester Rugby Club this Sunday.

A GIRLS’ rugby open day is being held at Chichester Rugby Club this Sunday.

This season has seen the club build on their success in mini and junior rugby with the introduction of under-15 girls’ rugby. Since September they have seen a number of girls of all abilities attend training sessions to learn the basics of the game, including passing, tackling, rucking and mauling.

The sessions are fun and friendly with plenty of time to ask questions and go over the points of the day. The aim of the under-15 girls is to enter the girls into games with other clubs in East Sussex and Surrey. Chichester are being supported by Sussex Rugby who, on the back of the efforts of the England women’s team at the Women’s Rugby World Cup, are keen to promote the sport among schools and clubs.

Tag rugby is being played in schools, but the sessions at Chichester RFC will take the girls into full-contact tackling, scrimmaging and lineouts, with full supervision enabling them to compete with other clubs later in the year.

If you are in Year 7, 8 or 9 and are interested in playing or trying out rugby, go to the open day on Sunday from 12.30 to 2.30pm at the rugby club at Oaklands Park.
