Rugby: Blues colts kill off Crawley

Chichester started really well with Rugman carrying hard. Constable cut back on a fantastic line going close and skipper Stirrup’s short pass to outside centre Patterson saw him sear through the gap for the opening score.

Fitzmaurice dominated the lineout and supplied clean quick ball and Gallimore came into the line at pace from full-back to breach the red defence for the second try after only 15 minutes.

Crawley came back to enjoy a bit more territory and the match went through a scrappy phase. Excellent tackles from Seehawong and Prior held them at bay.

The rest of the half was very disjointed and to add insult a good, hard tackle was deemed to be late and a yellow card was shown to Chi.

After the break, Prior had two or three storming runs knocking defenders aside. Two or three times great overlaps were created but a poor final pass halted Chi.

Strirrup was having another excellent game and Margarson looked to have scored but was deemed held up. Eventually open-side Adlington was on hand to twist and turn for the third try. Renwick slotted the extras.

Paige came on for his league debut on the wing and Chi pressed hard for the bonus point. Constable eventually powered off a scrum to bounce his opposite man for the fourth try.

MoM was Fitzmaurice ahead of Prior.

Michael Margarson, the Chi backs coach, said: “It was a very solid win and we got the job done – however we didn’t get to the heights of recent weeks. We are pleased with the win but know we must improve.”
