CHICHESTER'S Charlie Matthews helped England under-20s into the semi-finals of the IRB Junior World Championship semi-finals with a 26-20 win over South Africa.

Tries from London Wasps centre Elliot Daly, Newcastle Falcons No. 8 Alex Gray and Wasps wing Christian Wade helped England to the success, while Leicester Tigers fly half George Ford scored 11 points with the boot.

Matthews, who learned his rugby with Chichester RFC and now plays for Harlequins, played a key role in a victory watched by England senior manager Martin Johnson, England defence coach Mike Ford and Saracens head coach Andy Farrall.

Johnson gave an inspirational speech to the squad before the game, and the words clearly stuck with the side.

It was tough victory, with the Springboks always within touching distance of England.

Matthews and two other former Chichester youngsters, Kieran Low and Rob Buchanan, have been pivotal to the England under-20 success story of late.

Low is out injured at the moment but Buchanan was a replacement for the South African clash.

The semi-final against France was last night – find out how Matthews and the team got on at www.chichester.co.uk.
