Selsey Seals 3 Ferring 2

Selsey played their third game against a spirited Ferring side and ran out narrow winners in an entertaining home game.

They started the brighter with two quick goals before half-time.

The first was thanks to some great skills by Jake Gibbs to beat three players before firing into the roof of the net from a tight angle – then five minutes later he popped up in the box after beating three more Ferring players and firing in from 15 yards.

Selsey were cruising with Josh Jones having very little to do and they went three ahead with the goal of the game.

Ryan Hains worked a neat one-two with Luke Ayling before the ball was cleared by Ferring. It landed at Rhys Grocott’s feet and he promptly hit it straight over the keeper into the top corner from 30 yards.

With seven minutes left, Ferring got one back when a goalmouth scramble fell to the feet of a midfielder who got a toe in before the defender and scored from five yards.

Five minutes later to go a moment of madness from a Selsey central defender, putting his arms around the attacker, led to his sending-off and a penalty for Ferring which was dispatched into the bottom corner. Jones got his fingers to the ball but the shot was too powerful.

Ferring threw caution to the wind but never looked likely to score again.

The manager thanked all the parents who turned up and got the pitch ready.

Rustington Otters Red 1 Chichester City Colts 10

In the first round of the Invitation Cup, Chichester City Colts faced Rustington, who play one division below, but they began the game knowing cup upsets can easily occur.

But Rustington were overwhelmed by the Chichester performance and were outplayed for most of the game.

The first Chichester goal came within ten minutes with a precision pass into the box from Ashley Gillett which was tucked away into the back of the net for the first goal from Jack Kennedy.

Confident play in defence by Morgan Lowe, in his first game, kept most of the breaks under control, supported by great footwork and precision passing by Teddy Phillippo and Jacob Taylor.

Quality crosses into the box from MoM Ben Roberts allowed both Joe Broad and Josh Jensen to find their way on to the scoresheet.

Roberts put his own name on to the scoresheet when he was able to convert a cross from Gillett, firing in a direct shot over the defence from a free kick just outside the box.

A 5-1 scoreline at half-time gave Colts a very solid foundation to build on for the second half.

After a slow start, further goals started to flow from Harry Angell, Roberts, Broad, Gillett and George Purvis. There could have been many more but the Rustington keeper kept his resolve to the end.

UNDER-NINE

Barnham Trojans under-nine Blue have a new kit thanks to the continued support of Adams Beeny accountants in Bognor.

Managing director Mark Cook said he was happy to support local community activities.

He said: “Encouraging children to take part in sport and keeping fit is very important ... we hope the new kit will inspire the players to maintain their positive attitude and enjoyment of the game.”

Barnham Trojans Blue are a great group who have gelled well to create a good team.

Barnham Trojans have three under-nine teams, playing development football in the Arun & Chichester League.
