Sailing students hit cruise control

BEXHILL Sailing Club ended its two dinghy sail training courses on Saturday with a big treat for students who were given the opportunity to tackle a 47ft racing cruiser.

The club runs two parallel RYA level 2 courses on Monday evenings and Saturday mornings and this year 42 adults - mainly Bexhill residents - undertook the 10-week courses. Normally the course ends with a regatta for the students but this year with light winds forecast club member Roy Martin brought the yacht from Sovereign Harbour to give them the opportunity to try a different type of sailing.

Using the club's three rescue craft, 21 students were ferried out to the yacht which was fortunate to pick up a light breeze to take them to Galley Hill and back.

Training principal Ray Dixon said: "This was a fantastic opportunity for the students and a great end to the course. This has been an incredible year with the weather allowing the students to get out on the water almost every week and as a result they had all done remarkably well and were all now able to sail quite proficiently."

Most of the students had never been on a sailing boat before the course.
