Sailors steer course to perfect pursuit at Dell Quay

In the first Pursuit race, the dayboat of Ken Baker was the slowest boat on the water and started first. Baker was overtaken on the final leg by Chris Ede in his Solo, who secured first place, leaving Baker second and Anne and Jim Norfolk (2000) third. 

For the second Pursuit race, there was a bit more wind which meant the Laser 4.7 sailed by Sue Manning held her position, coming in third to Ede and Baker, who kept the same positions as the first race.

Wind conditions were very challenging for the Late Trophy series, resulting in many capsizes and retirements.

The 2000s were the first the fleet away with Mike Fitzgerald and Tim Dormer leading after the first beat. The Norfolks decided not to follow them and instead chose to sail the opposite shore. The Norfolks and Fitzgerald and Dormer had very close racing with Fitzgerald and Dormer just regaining the lead in the second round.

Final results saw the Norfolks first, Fitzgerald and Dormer second and Dave Ellis and Helen Penfold third.

In the second race, the Norfolks were first to the windward mark and were never challenged although Fitzgerald and Dormer certainly tried hard and at times closed the gap. Positions at the finish were as race one.

In the Solo fleet, there was strong competition for the favoured starboard end of the start line and those who managed to avoid the wind shadow of the Bosham side had the advantage, with Bill Dawber leading at the first mark in race one to go on and win.

The size of the fleet made for great racing with Chris Ede taking second place after a gust enabled him to plane past his father Richard and place him third.

A strengthening breeze brought a few retirements and capsizes in the second race with Dawber again taking first and Gordon Barclay pushing Chris Ede into third.

In the handicap races Tom Bettle (Topper) put the older and more experienced sailors to the test, winning the second race and coming third in the first race.
