Seaford College athletes have rivals on the run

Seaford medallists at the county finals: Anton Austin, Harry Marchant and James King

Seaford have some very talented boys and girls and punch above their weight in many fixtures when they face much bigger schools than themselves.

In the West Sussex West area championships in May, Seaford’s inter boys won overall with 14 winners in various events. In a match versus Hurstpierpoint, Worth and Eastbourne, Seaford’s inter boys won and they kept that success up in beating Charterhouse and Cranleigh just after half-term.

In June, Seaford’s Year 9 and 10 boys and girls competed at athletics versus Hurstpierpoint College and Ardingly with great success. The Year 10 boys were first and Year 9 came second overall.

Top wins on the track came from Jake Goosen in the 100m, Hugo Squires 200m, Nick Frost 400m, Tom Cowan 800m and Elliott Lewis 1,500m – and in the field for Kai Shadforth in the discus, Olly Crosdil (discus) and Elnur Eyybuv (shot).

Notable performances this season have come from Harry Leleu smashing the senior 1,500m record at the K2 meeting, and James King winning most senior, triple jump and long jump.

In the inter boys, Jasper Brazier has lost just one 100m race in three years and Tom Cowan is unbeaten at 800m this term.

Jess Millbourne is Seaford’s top girl performer, winning the county discus, and Jess Clay is also a talent. Ellie Stevens is Seaford’s best junior girl athlete. Henry Blackwell and Olly Crosdil are the best two junior boys.

The final outing of the term for all main athletes were the county Finals held at Crawley in mid-June. Seaford had 18 athletes competing (having been selected from WSW)

The best Seaford performance on the day was from Leleu, winning the county gold medal in the 3,000m.

Silver medals went to James King (long jump), Olly Salkeld (200m) and Harry Marchant (400m hurdles). Bronze medals were won by Byron Clark (discus), James King (triple jump), Elnur Eyybuv (shot), Zach Hodson (long jump and relay), Anton Austin (100m hurdles), and Jasper Brazier and Jake Goosen (relay).

The day after winning the 3,000m, Harry Leleu won the youth event at the Petworth Park triathlon, beating his GB rival. He was congratulated by GB triathlon stars the Brownlee brothers, who had oganised and were taking part in the senior event.
