Sidley hit for six by Hassocks

SIDLEY United crashed to a 6-0 defeat away to Hassocks in the Sussex League top flight on Tuesday night.

The Blues were five goals down at half time as their injury problems really came home to roost.

Sidley actually made a bright start with half chances falling to Scott McDonald and Peter Baker, but the writing was on the wall from the moment Hassocks took the lead on seven minutes when a Phil Gault shot ricocheted off the backside of Dave Henham and past goalkeeper Peter Newstead.

Hassocks struck four more times before the interval. A significant deflection enabled Matt Robbins to make it two before Gault completed a first half hat-trick with a free header and a close range finish, the latter after Newstead had pulled off a superb save to keep out an initial effort. Peter Lear claimed the fifth with a header which Jordan Wood could only thump into the roof of his own net.

The scoring was rounded off on 64 minutes when Anthony Hibbert tucked away a penalty awarded for a foul by Newstead.

"The first half was very poor. We lacked a physical presence and at times it was like men against boys," said Sidley joint manager Andy Laskey. "The second half was a hundred times better."
