Solid run by Olympic sprinter

SEAN Baldock heightened his case for a spot in Great Britain's final 4x400m team to race in the Olympic Games next month courtesy of another solid run.

The former Hillcrest Language College pupil finished third as part of the European Select team in the 400m individual race at the Norwich Union International in Birmingham on Sunday.

The 27-year-old clocked a time, to which little should be read into, of 46.24 in chilly, blustery conditions at his favourite track.

He again finished behind Daniel Caines and Tim Benjamin who, on present form, are undoubtedly clear of the pack as Britain's leading single lap athletes.

But Baldock did again come home two spots ahead of Malachi Davis, the American who was controversially awarded the third and final individual slot just days after switching nationality to enable him to run for Britain. He also beat Robert Tobin, another relay hopeful, into fourth place.

With Caines' and Benjamin's places in the relay quartet as good as set in stone, the result must consolidate Baldock's place as a favourite to net one of the final two berths from the squad of seven.

Result: 1 T. Benjamin 45.58, 2 D. Caines 45.88, 3 S. Baldock 46.24, 4 R. Tobin 46.47, 5 M. Davis 46.47, 6 J. Deacon 46.80, 7 G. Hedman 47.13, 8 C. Williams 47.51.
