Tennis: Phillips shows her style at Queen's Club

Felpham's 15-year-old star Lisa Phillips played her first ladies' team match of the season for Brighton Parks at the Queen's Club.

The away match was played at the prestigious venue of the Aegon Tennis Championships where there is a choice of 27 outdoor courts.

Phillips played on one of the four artificial grass courts which are arguably one of the smoothest artificial tennis courts in the country.

Brighton Parks won the Aegon Sussex Team Tennis League last summer and gained promotion to the south east south regional tier of the National League.

Phillips played at second string against 23-year-old Julia Lowis and got off to a slow start, making unforced errors and lost the first three games before turning the match around.

Lowis’ footwork and speed around the court were enviable and, with her attacking shots, made her difficult to beat.

Phillips counter-attacked and the long attacking rallies were top-class, which befitted the venue.

Phillips clinched the first set 7-6 and secured the second set 6-0, a score which did not reflect just how tight the match was.

Phillips and doubles partner Sharon Fitton faced Lowis and Annabel Watson, who on paper were the stronger pair. Phillips and Fitton put up a fight, pushing their opponents to a tie-break, but went down 3-6, 6-3, 4-10.

Phillips’ next team match was against Hampden Park on artificial grass. Hampden Park had a few players missing.

She played a steady match and won comfortably 6-2, 6-2 against Naomi Jackson. Phillips and Fitton teamed up for a doubles win of 6-1, 6-0 against Jackson and Nicky Addison.

Phillips’ next team match is at home against the Wimbledon Club and it is expected to be another tough match.
