Title is Saxons’ to lose

Saxons are four points clear at the South Hockey League Sussex Area - Division One summit after they won 7-2 away to Crawley II and second-placed Horsham II lost 4-3 at home to third-placed Penguin last weekend.

Cornish, the captain of Saxons, said: “It’s definitely ours to lose. We’ve still got a few dodgy ones, we’ve got to go to Lewes (III) and we’ve got to go to Penguins as well.

“It just gives us that room for a bit of error which over the last couple of years we’ve not had, and we’ve made that error and it’s cost us.”

Saxons will be expected to maintain their good start tomorrow (Saturday) when they travel to East Grinstead IV, who are bottom of the table and have lost eight out of eight.

Although George Eldridge will return, Jamie Busbridge has fractured his thumb and will be out until after Christmas, and Oscar Rogers (pictured), who has been performing very well this season, has been told to rest a knee injury until the new year.

Pete Watters almost quit as a result of the bickering during the disappointing second half at Crawley, but has been persuaded to play in the seconds for a few weeks. Will Orr and Rob Whitehouse are set to come up.
