The Pirates were a little slack at the defensive end – unlike them as defence is something they pride themselves on. The quarter finished with Bognor leading 18-16.

In the second quarter the Tropics flew out of the blocks. Worthing got themselves on a run, breaking down the Pirates’ defence with ease and increasing their score.

After a quick timeout, Bognor began to up their defence and move the ball about. As the quarter ended Worthing had turned it around for a half-time 34-33 lead.

The Pirates started to work even harder on defence, making it difficult for the Tropics to score.

Kev Wilson was unimpressed with the number of points Bognor had so he added 12 to the score in quarter three.

Tropics were not out of it but the quarter ended with Bognor having regained the lead, 55-48.

The fourth quarter saw a similar trend as Bognor played solid defence. George Roythorne and Rich Lowe combined to increase the score.

Worthing continued to push and Bognor couldn’t afford to relax.

Lee Barnes did well to drive to the basket and draw fouls which he converted into points.

The Pirates saw out the remaining time to get themselves a very hard-earned win.

He has coached premier-division basketball teams in five different countries – winning national titles in four – and coached three different senior men’s national teams around the globe, including England between 1994 and 2004. He has also attended seven Olympic Games in a variety of capacities.

Away from the basketball court, Dr Nemeth worked as a PE teacher and head of department in his native Hungary and at Kuwait’s Modern American Private School.

He gained a BSc degree in senior coaching and a Masters in physical education teaching at the Hungarian University for Physical Education (HUPE) in Budapest. He also received his doctorate in training methodology from the same institution.

He has a simple message for his students following his appointment. “Whatever is your goal: Dream it, plan it, train it and deliver it meticulously and leave the ‘just do it’ for the Nike store end-of-line sale. You must make it from start to finish for a praise. Do not think the world must look after you and cater you. The world was here first, so you must cut through,” he said.

Melissa Mantle, head of physical education at the University of Chichester, said: “We’re delighted to have someone of Laszlo’s experience on the team at the university. He’s been involved in all levels of competition, from Olympic Games to European and World Championships as well as national league level. From the competitive end of sport, he will be a fantastic source of knowledge and inspiration for our students.

“Laszlo will be teaching on the topic of coaching, in particular basketball, on our sports coaching PE courses, and his appointment underlines the quality of the education we are providing for students who come to Chichester to study coaching or teaching within the physical education department.”
