TV's Gabby Logan urges West Sussex schools to get sporty

Last year more than 14,000 schools across Britain signed up to the week-long national initiative, with five million children taking part in a host of activities that included staging an opening ceremony, athletics, tennis, football or even a parents’ mile.

Already signed up for this year’s week-long event is Medmerry Primary School, Selsey, and Logan has urged other schools in the area to follow suit.

The mum-of-two, ambassador for Lloyds TSB National School Sports week that runs from June 27 to July 1, said: “It’s a great scheme. It’s not necessarily about children becoming Olympic athletes but just getting healthier and enjoying themselves.

“Sport’s a great British pastime and you can have a good time with mates, as well as doing it competitively.” Logan’s sporting pedigree will be an inspiration to children.

She represented Wales as a gymnast in the 1990 Commonwealth Games in Auckland and is married to former Scottish rugby player Kenny Logan, while her dad Terry Yorath, 61, is an ex-Wales footballer and manager.

Participating schools in this year’s event could win the chance to carry the Olympic torch or win tickets to London 2012.

“It’s about helping people to get involved in sport and perhaps try one of the Olympic or Paralympic sports and maybe try to set new personal bests and enjoy sport,” Logan added.

“There are opportunities to win tickets when you sign up and equipment for schools so it is a great event.”
