Under-par Overington takes the trophy at Cowdray Park

This normally precedes the Christmas dinner and proves popular but it had to be re-scheduled because of the extreme weather.

It’s a stableford but is played with only two clubs and a putter, placing emphasis on club selection and ingenuity in shot-making.

Scoring was always going to prove difficult and not too many players exceeded 30 points.

One man who took it all in his stride was 22-handicapper Barry Overington, who won with an excellent score of 37. Barry has just had his handicap increased by one shot, and it was by that margin he beat the luckless Graham Evans, who recorded another consistent score of 36.

Third with 34 was former club captain Harvey Terry, a single-figure handicapper, on countback from Rob Doney. Prizes were presented by former seniors’ captain Wally Mitchell.

* Twenty-six ladies played in the best nine-hole competition at Cowdray Park in sunny but rather breezy conditions.

Results: 0-23 handicap – 1 Barbara Smith 22pts ocb, 2 Cath Yates 22 ocb, 3 Joyce Fanshawe 22 ocb. 24-36 handicap – 1 Myrna Heustice 24, 2 Beryl Bishop 23, 3 Helen Chapman 22.

AVISFORD PARK

The senior medal competition at Avisford Park brought a divsion-one win for George Butler with nett 74. In division two, Michael Joyce with 70 took the honours.

The midweek stableford was won by David Feist with 34 points.

The club medal was won by Danny Carter in division one with nett 67 and division two was taken by Jayson Walker with 65.

The senior stableford honours went to Peter Smith in division one with 36 points and Basil Woolven (division two) with 35.

The midweek stableford was won by Graham Brawn with 36 points. The club stableford was won in division one by Simon Small with 44 points and Stuart Rackham in division two with 40.

The Gerry Reid trophy was claimed by Peter Collins with 39 points. The midweek medal went to Brian Comber, scoring 68.
