VIDEO: Concannon goes the distance for Chi Half second spot

PETER CONCANNON has had some great battles this year with club-mate James Baker - but knew he was never going to beat him over the Chi Half Marathon course.

Nevertheless he was delighted to finish second in 1hr 18min 25sec – six and a half minutes behind Baker but nearly two minutes in front of third-placed Graham Russ.

Concannon said: “I’m pleased with second place. I’m more of a 5k and 10k man, I don’t do half marathons. In fact I haven’t done a training run over 13 miles, so I’ll take second place. I was never going to beat James.

“I was on my own (in second place) the entire time. I was just trying to stick to the time I’d set and play it sensibly, and it seemed to pan out all right.

“James (Baker) is an awful lot more experienced than me and I do tend to rely on a pacemaker as a preference but on this occasion I knew it was going to be pretty-much solo running and it was fine. I’m pleased with my efforts.

“It’s a good course, a very tough course going up the Trundle, but enjoyable - and we had nice weather for it.”

Asked if he’d give the half marathon another crack next year, Concannon said: “I’d have thought so. It’s on the doorstep so you can’t really say no!”

At the other end of the field, Chichester’s Nordic Walkers turned a few heads and put in a fine performance.

Spokeswoman Sylvia May said: “We were delighted to have 23 Nordic Walkers and one, Sally Anne Salter, coming in at 2.54.01 – beating last year’s record of 3.06.

“We had members coming in from Wimbledon and Tunbridge Wells and are looking to get 50 walkers next year.”
