Weather chaos causes league re-think

The Mid-Sussex League have abandoned the current programme and split each division into two groups due to the backlog of fixtures caused by the wet winter.

Each team in a group will play each other once. The top two in each group will then play each other to decide the title, with the bottom team in each group being relegated provided numbers next season are sufficient.

In arranging leagues current records were taken into account, with average points per match being multiplied five times to give a starting point. The Mid Sussex used the same system in 2001.

The cup competitions will continue unchanged.

It is the second time in six years that the Mid-Sussex League has been forced to scrap the current championships.

League secretary Lawrie Parsons said: 'It was the decision of the clubs, but there did not seem much alternative.

'We have already had 420 games postponed and the long-range weather forecast for the rest of the season is for near average or above average rainfall.

'We've only had four or five near full Saturdays in 15 weeks. There was little or no room for manouvre.'
