Westwood ho! New golf captain drives towards a big year

Traditionally the Chichester veterans’ captain’s drive-in marks the beginning of the new skipper’s year of selfless and devoted service.

Unfortunately, the vets had to delay new captain Colin Westwood’s celebrations because of recent atrocious weather, but in the end it went off well.

In still rather gloomy conditions, a number of hardy veterans pointed Westwood in the right direction and supported him so well he managed a magnificent drive.

As is traditional, many had bets on to see how far it would go. Anything from 30 yards (unlikely) to 250 yards (also unlikely without serious prescription) were chosen.

Veteran Campbell Goldsmid wandered off into the gloom to discover the hit, which resulted in a measurement of 158 yards.

Coincidentally, this was exactly the yardage selected by Goldsmid himself.

A new laser measuring device was suggested for his prize as members wished Westwood well for the year.
