Wet and windy - but golfers have a hole lot of fun for Macmillan

Four local golfers completed 72 holes at Goodwood and Chichester in the Macmillan Cancer Support Longest Day Golf Challenge.

The ‘Happy Hookers’ team – Roger Dawkins, Darryll Mendoza, Sam Mendoza and Paul Bromell – completed four full rounds on four different courses in a single day.

The date was chosen in advance with high hopes of a sunny day but the team were greeted at 4.30am on the first tee of Goodwood’s Downs course by heavy rain and strong winds.

The group, from the Chichester and Hambrook areas, battled through the weather on the two Goodwood courses before moving on to the drier but still windy Chichester Cathedral and Tower courses in the afternoon and evening.

The highlight was the rain stopping, but on course the standout moment was Sam Mendoza’s two on the difficult 440-yard 14th on the Downs course. After hitting a long drive down the middle of the fairway, Mendoza holed his second from 170 yards.

Overall, top scorer was Darryll Mendoza, whose accurate approach shots saw him hit the flagstick on numerous occasions. All contributed, though, and considering the testing conditions, scoring was excellent.

The Happy Hookers have so far raised just under £1,200 for the charity and if you would like to contribute, visit http://original.justgiving.com/happyhookers
