Who'll be Goodwood's top jockey - Hughes, Dettori ... or Chris Evans?

RICHARD HUGHES looks to extend his lead in Goodwood's jockeys championship tonight (June 10) as the track looks to build on the success of its first racing-DJ night.

But he will have to give up at least some of the limelight to Frankie Dettori, who will have a race named after him in honour of the anniversary of his first win on a British track, which came at Goodwood on June 1987.

And another jockey – disc-jockey Chris Evans – will be grabbing his share of the attention later with this week’s after-racing entertainment.

Hughes has had eight wins at Goodwood already this season as he continues the trend that made him the man to beat at the course last year. Ted Durcan is his closest rival with six.

Hughes is lined up for six rides tomorrow – including three for father-in-law Richard Hannon, who is Goodwood’s top trainer again this year by some distance.

Action on the track begins at 6.15 with the Toyo Tires Maiden Handicap, followed by Frankie’s 24th Anniversary Maiden Stakes at 6.45, the Golf At Goodwood Stakes at 7.20, the Crimbourne Stud Stakes at 7.55, the Hildon Stakes at 8.30, finishing with the Friday Evenings At Goodwood Handicap at 9pm.

After that, Radio 2 breakfast presenter Evans will take centre stage from a booth overlooking the winner’s enclosure and parade ring, with large numbers expected to stay to watch.

Last Friday, 7,500 people were in attendance on the evening, about 3,000 of whom stayed on for Boy George’s set.

The parade ring was rapidly transformed into an outdoor dance floor complete with lasers, lights and dry ice as the Culture Club icon took to the decks. Wearing one of his trademark hats he soon had the crowd dancing as darkness fell.

Goodwood marketing manager Bradley Eccleshare said: “We were delighted with the attendance and overwhelmed with the crowd’s reaction to the opportunity to dance on the parade ring.”
