WILLIAMS' GREAT RUN AT PARLIAMENT HILL

LEWES Athletic Club's Ashley Williams had a brilliant run to lead the Sussex runners home in the Under 15 Boys' race at the National Cross Country championships at Parliament Hill Fields, Hampstead Heath.

In competitions on Sussex soil Ashley usually succumbs to arch rival Lewis Hards from the Phoenix Club but in the South of England and now the English Cross Country championships it has been the Lewes runner who has come out on top.

In the bitterly cold, windy conditions at Hampstead Heath, a course normally renowned for mud, Ashley certainly did not have things his own for not only did he have the Phoenix runner to contend with he was had a tussle with club mate Matt Suter who ran his socks off.

All three were locked together as they approached the end of the 4.5km race but Ashley used his longer stride to good advantage to place 33rd in 18min 51sec, just one second and one place ahead of the Phoenix runner with Matt also clocking 18min 52sec in 35th position.

With Josh Burgess placing 128th in 20min 04sec and Louis Gower 238th in 22min 02sec, the Lewes quartet finished 16th in the team race.
