It is designed to aid golfers in recording longest drives and nearest-the pin shots and has been demonstrated to potential investors at the golf show at London’s Earls Court and it received a very good reception.

The 47-year-old, who plays golf at Goodwood, said: “The show was a brilliant experience and the magnetic marker system really created a buzz.”

The Aldwick resident said he came up with the idea when playing with friends in adverse weather conditions.

“I got fed up trying to write my name on a piece of sodden, mushy paper and thought there must be another way,” he said.

The invention allows players to mark the position of their ball with a magnetic disc on a board which is placed beside the green.

Briggs added: “The magnetic marker system can be used in all weathers and can even be customised to suit individuals, golf societies and golf clubs.”

He is hoping the product will become a staple part of a club’s golfing experience and is looking to launch the product to the market at an upcoming event at Chichester Golf Club early in 2014 .

COWDRAY PARK

A November Stableford was the final chance for Cowdray Park seniors to enhance their positions in the Eclectic and Carter trophies.

The Eclectic had a record number of 141 players submitting cards, with some players only handing in one card, while a number submitted the maximum of 16.

Early in the season, single-figure handicapper Paul Owen set a fierce pace and, by halfway, had parred or birdied all 18 holes, leaving himself little margin for further improvement. Sadly he sustained a wrist injury which meant he missed three vital competitions, which might have swung the title his way.

This opened the door for the chasing pack, with the ever-improving Mick Colban heading the table briefly. On his return Paul Owen claimed back the lead before Frank Cheevers came with a well-timed run to take the lead in September and hold on until the finish, winning on countback by virtue of a superb back nine consisting of six birdies and three pars.

This was the closest finish for years and highlights the strength in depth of the seniors’ section now, with only six points covering the top 42 players. Other leaders during the year were past champions Pat Bonner, David Tilley and Phil Harrison, while John Doran made a dramatic improvement of seven places, in the final competition, to claim fifth place.

Cowdray Park seniors held their annual Triple Six competition.

The winners, with a really good score of 42 points, were John Lee and John Kitchener, who obviously gelled well together. Playing alongside them came the strong pairing of Phil Harrison and Terry Jasper, who took second place with 39 points.

The three different types of game seemed to prove problematical for some of what appeared to be strong pairs but who were only able to record modest scores.

First group out featured the eventual third-placed Mike King and Mike Burgess, who ended with 38 points. On the fourth hole, Mike King hit a stunning blind shot to the green and left his partner a short putt for a par.

Their playing partners Tony Castley and Dave Hirons found themselves in trouble on the par-five fifth with Castley under a tree with 140 yards to the green - but he was able to get a full shot and smashed the ball to within a few feet of the pin and a chance of a par.

Hirons, still recovering from a serious stomach operation, proved he still has retained his touch on the par-three ninth when he put his drive close to pin for his partner to tap in for a two and four points.

On the 16th, Mike Burgess played two superb shots into the tricky green and sunk his putt for a birdie and three points. This event marked the swansong, as competitions secretary for Hirons, who has done such a magnificent job over the past six years organising events and providing scorecards on the day. BOGNOR

Before a super early Christmas lunch, Bognor ladies played a Stableford competition in teams of four, with the best two scores to count.

CHICHESTER

Yellow ball competitions were the choice for Chichester ladies to support the BBC’s Children in Need appeal.

Each team member rotated the use of the double-points yellow ball on each hole.

Desperate not to lose it – tensions mounted as each hole was completed. The prize for returning to the clubhouse with the ball was three extra points.

The winning team with 127 points was Helen Ball, Lisa Mitchelmore and Lesley Downs. Close runners-up with 120 points were Dot Collyer, Fran Syson and Liz Fraser.

A total of 46 players from both Tuesday and Saturday competitions took part.

The last of the qualifying competitions for this year was the winter round of the Lady Captain’s Four Seasons charity competition. Both Tuesday and Saturday ladies took part and after combining the results, Lisa Mitchelmore was victorious with 37 points.

Second was Jennifer Sherwood with 34 and in third place was Mary-Lou Litton with 33 points.
