Young fencers scoop Sussex medals for Chichester

Chichester Fencing Club fielded a superb team of young fencers in the Sussex under-12 and under-14 championships in Rottingdean.

In the under-14 girls’ competition, Charlotte Beadle, a regular medallist in the county, was in her usual dynamic form to take the silver medal, missing out on the gold by only a couple of points after a very hard-fought competition.

The under-14 boys’ competition brought another riveting display of foil fencing with Tom Raymond-Wells finishing in a wonderful third place just behind his team-mate Robin Elliott in second.

Both were lovely ambassadors for their sport, conducting themselves in a truly sporting way while showing off their tremendous talents.

The 12-and-under boys’ contest was a fascinating competition with Sebastian Maxted and Harry Gray, the two youngest competitors in the field, both narrowly missing out on medals, finishing fifth and sixth respectively.

Their team-mate Isaac Jolley was in unstoppable form as usual, retaining the title he won so devastatingly last year to become Sussex foil champion for another year.

The under-12 girls weren’t going to be overshadowed by their wonderful male counterparts. Chloe Wildsmith and Tara Sallaba were again only just pipped to the post for the medals, but both were competing for the first time in the championships and did superbly.

Maud Bonham-Carter and Emily Ind, both competing for their school Windlesham House but both coached by Chichester coach Sharon Blackman, shared the bronze medals, a wonderful achievement for both the girls in their first championships.

Angel Bull retained the title she won so brilliantly last year in tremendously-convincing style.

There was never a moment when she didn’t look every inch the stylish champion she is.
