Crawley's Musical Sam extends her online run

Crawley’s Sammy Sewell is promising to take her free online Musical Sam! music sessions through to Easter and maybe beyond – until she can get back to nurseries, pre-schools and playgroups.

Sammy took Musical Sam! online last year during the first lockdown – and has been delighted with the response.

“Originally I started 18 years ago. I was a qualified primary school teacher and then I started to have children and I didn’t really want to go back to teaching.

“I met a lady who did music all the time and I just thought how amazing it would be to be doing something you love every day.

“I started doing it mainly with pre-schools, running from Crawley I had about nine classes running, and it was such a joy. From that I went into doing more, and that became Musical Sam! about 12 years ago.”

Then came the lockdown: “I was thinking what on earth could I do, apart from helping the neighbours. I just thought I should somehow get it out to people, and that’s when I went on Facebook and people have absolutely loved it.

“It has been lovely – absolutely lovely.

“I have had to move from the garden back into the house but I might be able to get back into the garden again soon. I have been doing the Chinese New Year and we are about to start doing The Tiger Who Came To Tea.”

Sammy estimates she gets hundreds of youngsters watching each week – and she has also been drawing in audiences from America, Australia and Greece.

“I will just continue now on Facebook right the way through to Easter or until we can start getting back into schools.”

In the meantime, you can enjoy the Facebook version every Tuesday morning from 10.30am for about 35 minutes. Just search for Musical Sam!
