Petworth House visitors invited to paint on the walls and star gaze

VISITORS to Petworth House at the start of a new season are being invited to take part in a host of new events which include discovering the daunting spring clean faced by Petworth servants, unleashing their creative sides or doing a spot of star gazing.

The annual spring clean was a tall order and on Saturday and Sunday from 11am-3.30pm visitors can take a peep below stairs where the laundry needed to be washed and the sheets repaired, knives sharpened and silver polished.

Visitors can also pick up a few tips on household management at ‘Quiet Industry.’

During half-term children can explore the magical world of Petworth Park where the National Trust will be bringing the outside, inside.

An entire room will be turned into a giant white canvas for youngsters to add their own version of the spring time park.

The fun takes place from tomorrow (Monday, February 13) to Wednesday from 11am-3pm.

There will also be a chance to stargaze at the ‘Nightwatch on the South Downs’ event on Thursday, February 16 from 6pm to 9pm when expert advice will be on offer from Dr John Mason and visitors can take a peek through a telescopes and see a guided laser show.

Atmospheric attic tours will once again this year lead into areas not normally open to visitors who can join a tour up the creaking staircase to the attic rooms, once used by Petworth’s servants on February 18, 21 and 25.

A guided journey through ‘A Painters Park’ is on February 19 and 26 at 11am.
