Draft Ofsted report judges Durand '˜inadequate'

The Durand Academy, which runs a weekly boarding school for older pupils in the former St Cuthman's school at Stedham, faces the prospect of being placed in special measures following a damning Ofsted report.

Inspectors judged the academy, which has its infant and junior school in South London, ‘inadequate’ in a draft report seen by the BBC and published in error before Ofsted withdrew it saying the final version would be published ‘in the coming days’.

In a letter to parents, the academy’s governing body said it had ‘no doubt’ it had been ‘deliberately published’ and the release was “part of yet further attacks on the school by the educational establishment”.

The report said senior staff did not ensure ‘safeguarding was at the top of their priorities’. It also said senior leaders had ‘an inflated view of the school’s strengths and underestimate the seriousness of its weaknesses’

In addition weak leadership and governance meant it was not providing pupils with an adequate quality of education overall and its own evaluation of its performance was neither ‘rigorous nor accurate’.

Ofsted said the school’s inspectorate was ‘urgently investigating’ how the draft had been published and had apologised to Durand.
