PICTURES: Harting summer show

Harting Horticultural Summer Show on Saturday was a real success.

Flowers, vegetables, fruit, cookery, handicrafts and photography were on display in the marquee at Harting War Memorial Playing Fields.

Show secretary Cynthia Clue said: “Fortunately, the forecast of raging winds and rain didn’t put off exhibitors or visitors to the show.”

David Thistleton-Smith won the RHS Banksian Medal for most prize money overall and the Uppark Challenge Cup for most points in the vegetables and fruit section. He also took home the Sussex Shield for best vegetable display.

Cynthia Clue won the Clifford Sharpe Memorial Cup for most points in the flowers section.

Malcolm Hutchings won all the first prizes in the dahlias section and took home the Lutman Dahlia Cup for most points in that section, as well as the Wakeford Cup for best flower exhibit.

Jane Simmons won the Simmons Cup for the flower arrangement section and Guy Henetson won the Geoffrey Thistleton-Smith Cup for his Red, White and Blue flower arrangement, judged by the public.

Sheila Torrens won the Mangham Plate for flowers, fruit and vegetables, awarded to someone who has not previously won a cup. Ruth Bonner won the Challenge Cup for cookery, Julie Nash won the Walker Cup for handicrafts and Chris Healey won the Coulson Cup for amateur photography.

In the junior classes, Holly Jurd and Ethan Sheldrake-French shared the Children’s Challenge Cup for age eight and over, while Thea French-Brown and Anna Wyatt shared the David Bird Cup for age seven and under.

Angela Church won the special class for a potato plant grown in a pot provided by the society at its spring show, based on the largest weight produced.
